Launching Moving & Handling Awareness Day 2026

Good moving and handling practices are everyone’s responsibility, not just those in specialist roles.

Every day, people across health and social care settings make decisions that impact both their own safety and the well-being of those they support. By taking a shared approach, where staff, managers, and organisations all play their part, we can reduce the risk of injury, promote dignity, and create safer environments for all.

Moving and Handling Awareness Day is a reminder that small actions, like using the right equipment, following training, and speaking up about risks, make a big difference. When everyone commits to safer practices, we build a culture where prevention comes first, and everyone benefits.

Who should get involved?

You don't have to be a member of NBE to get involved! Almost everyone uses moving and handling at some point, and it can make a huge difference to ensure it is carried out properly. Moving and Handling Awareness Day provides the ideal opportunity to find out more about the safest ways to carry out any moving and handling tasks.

It is also an opportunity for Moving and Handling professionals to share what they know with colleagues and their wider teams, as well as discover more from others in the field.

Everyone will learn something useful!

Why should you get involved?

It's a great opportunity to celebrate the role of you and your colleagues in Moving and Handling. Many of us find our services squeezed and being encouraged by a joint celebration is just what we need.

Our roles are made up differently in the varied organisations we support, and to hear from others might give you some ideas about new ways of working. Increasing awareness of how we add value to organisations is good for our teams and those we are engaging with.

Pop in to one or all sessions, join the quiz at lunch or simply pledge how you are taking forward the safer handling agenda locally. It will be fantastic to have you involved - together we are stronger.

What will happen on the day?

There will be activities everyone can get involved with throughout the day with colleagues and friends as well as activities that can be completed at a time that works for you. You don't have to be a member of NBE:

➡️ Live Webinars from Moving & Handling professionals from a range of backgrounds.
➡️ Did You Know printable posters that can be discussed in advance with the best practice answers being revealed on the day.
➡️ Make a pledge related to Moving & Handling and be entered into our competition to win a year of National Back Exchange membership*. Some of the NBE board have already made their pledges - see the photos above for examples!
➡️ Host a Moving & Handling coffee morning to raise awareness of key issues or showcase equipment in a relaxed and informal setting, encouraging connection from other teams.
➡️ Arrange a moving challenge to see how far your team can virtually move in a week by tracking their distance, meanwhile promoting physical activity in the workplace.

Plus, you can test your knowledge with our online quiz which will take place at 1 pm.
