I first developed an interest in manual handling whilst nursing within acute elderly medicine at the Leeds General Infirmary in 1994. The role of Moving & Handling Key Trainer nurtured a desire to pursue a career in this field and in 1997, I took on the role of manual handling advisor within a mental health and community trust, followed ten years later by the same role within Wakefield PCT.
During this time, I also carried our freelance work and developed an interest in manual handling within the funeral industry. With a colleague, I developed and delivered specialised training for this very unique and challenging area of practice and provided training and consultancy for numerous funeral services across the country. I have spoken at conferences on the challenges faced by this service and continue to develop practice within this area.
I left the NHS in 2010 and now work as a freelance moving and handling trainer and consultant. This has opened up new challenges and I have found myself involved in many areas of manual handling practice outside of healthcare – including advisory work for a television soap!
I have been an active member of my local back exchange group for many years and I am currently Product Review Editor for Column.
I was extremely pleased to be successful in gaining the role of NBE Regional Officer for the West at conference 2011. I am devoted to ensuring that the membership remains integral to NBE business and I intend to be an ambassador for local groups, representing their views and ensuring that their voices are heard. I can assure that effective communication at all levels will be one of my key objectives and I will bring fresh ideas and energy to the role.
